Programs and Services for Young Adults

Supporting Independence. Inspiring Creativity and Success.

Young Adult Services (YAS) mission is to assist individuals affected by serious mental illness and/or traumatic events, so they may reach their fullest potential. Bridges’ YAS program helps young adults ages 18 – 25, who may be transitioning out of DCF or foster care and have mental health needs, achieve the necessary skills for a more independent adult life. YAS program services are community based, supporting the individual in their own residence. Services include clinical, case management, social integration, educational and/or employment support and residential assistance.

Trauma Sensitive Treatment

Many of the young people who have been referred to YAS have experienced trauma, including neglect and physical, and/or sexual abuse, and as a result, may suffer from associated symptoms.  Because of this, all aspects of our services are trauma sensitive and built upon the principles of trauma treatment.

Social Rehabilitation

YAS assists people to achieve a higher-level social functioning through group activities and participation in clubs and other community organizations. We have also integrated Vocational and Social Rehabilitation services through the operation of a coffee shop, Coffee Haven West located in downtown West Haven. With staff onsite, YAS clients have access to a functional music studio, exercise equipment, computers and opportunities to explore their creative interests and develop talents and skills to help them reach their vocational and social rehabilitation goals. The shop is not open to the public at this time.

Home and Community Based Services

A variety of residential supports are provided, including transitional apartment services with short-term availability of staff up to 24 hours per day / 7 days per week. Staff typically visit clients in their apartments in order to assist, teach, and support them in activities which foster independence.

Vocational Services

Young Adult Services follows the Integrated Placement and Support model, to support individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges in their efforts to achieve steady, meaningful employment in mainstream competitive jobs, either part-time or full-time. Assisting people with access to mainstream education and technical training are included as ways to advance career paths.
